More Details On The Galaxy Note 10

Naturally there’s a lot of focus on the Galaxy S10 as it gets ready to go big in the retail space, but many are looking beyond the flagship to the Note 10, expecting the real leap forward for Samsung to be found in the larger form factor. So what’s exciting about the upcoming phablet? Let’s start with the S-Pen:

This device will also have an innovative new Samsung S Pen in its holster. This device will make use of every feature delivered with the Galaxy Note 9, plus more, bringing Bluetooth once again, this time with a considered camera. It’s unlikely the long-rumored (and patented by Samsung) camera-in-stylus will be delivered this year, given the state of the display tech, but you never know.

Creasing The Galaxy Fold

Meanwhile one of the major concerns of the Galaxy Fold has been highlighted with a closer look at a pre-release model. It concerns the area of the screen where the handset is folded. It’s rather obvious where the fold is because of the crease in the screen. Forbes’ Gordon Kelly reports:

…a new hands-on video has exposed a deal-breaking problem with Samsung’s imminent screen-folding smartphone: a permanent crease runs down the middle of the display.

In fact, the crease is so pronounced (the panel is plastic) that it is visually distracting throughout the duration of the hands-on. It is also not helped by a heavily protruding rear camera (something Samsung had almost eliminated from its recent flagships) which makes the phone look slightly bent when used on a flat surface.

OnePlus 7’s Latest Details Pop Up

Thanks to a leaked case, we can deduce more information about the upcoming OnePlus 7. Take the case cut-outs and lining them up (ahem) with other leaks and familial handsets such as the Oppo F11 Pro; you can expect the OnePlus 7 to have a triple-lens camera and a pop up selfie camera, as I explained earlier this week:

The first is the tall central cutout for the main camera. It’s certainly talker than the OnePlus 6T cases, and there are two options here. The first is a return to a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor under the camera - which is possible but flues in the face of OnePlus’ push toward in-display fingerprint reading and facial recognition. The second (and more likely) is the addition of a third lens to the camera, increasing the prowess of the OnePlus flagship as a camera.

The second gap is just visible on the top edge of the case. It lines up with the location of the rumored pop-up forward facing camera.

But I Can Take A Picture Of My Cat

While reviewers are waiting for the release software of the Nokia 9 PureView, many of them are working out just how good the penta-lens camera is. And for many people, that means working with the Internet’s favourite subject. A cat. Chris Davies gets to work:

The degree of detail is what catches your eye first. Close-up shots of whiskers and fur have a crispness and clarity that leaves the best of other smartphone cameras looking fuzzy. Texture is one of those elements in photography that’s hard to define or describe, but the way the Nokia 9 PureView captures the dense velvet of my cat’s nose has a quality I’d traditional expect to have to reach for a dedicated camera – with a larger sensor – in order to achieve.

More Budget Pixel Details

Matching up with codenamed found in Android’s source code, there’s more evidence that Google’s entry-level pixel smartphones will be known as the Pixel 3A and the Pixel 3A XL. Stephen Hall reports on the name, and some specifications:

We can now confirm more specs about the Pixel 3a via a reliable source. The device’s 5.6-inch display is OLED (not LCD, as many have assumed), and has a resolution of 2220×1080 at 440dpi. There’s a Snapdragon 670 on board, there’s 4GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel wide-angle front shooter, and a 12-megapixel rear shooter. The battery on the smaller Pixel 3a is 3,000mAh.

Our source says the camera outputs identical image quality to the Pixel 3, but the camera app has poorer performance. It’s still unclear how the 3a XL differs from the 3a.

Google Goes After Gamers

Google has announced a new game streaming service. Stadia will be integrated into its other services (especially alongside YouTube and gameplay videos) with your game sessions ‘saved’ into the cloud. Tom Warren reports:

Describing it as a platform for everyone, Pichai talked up Google’s ambitions to stream games to all types of devices. Stadia will stream games from the cloud to the Chrome browser, Chromecast, and Pixel devices, and it will launch at some point in 2019 in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe.

Staying with games, Xiaomi have released the Black Shark 2 smartphone in China. This gaming-optimised handset is built around the Mi9 platform, but is punching out some impressive specs to capture the attention of mobile gamers. Anton Shilov reports:

Relying on the platform that powers Xiaomi’s Mi9 smartphone, the Black Shark 2 handset is claimed to be re-designed for gaming both inside and the outside. The smartphone comes in a chassis that is not only tailored for a comfortable grip, but is also compatible with the company’s Gamepad 2.0 hardware add-on that connects to the phone using Bluetooth and adds 12 buttons, a physical joystick, and even a touchpad.

Following discussions with the European Commission, Google will be offering new Android Owners the option of which browser and search engines to be both downloaded to their phones and set up as the default:

After the Commission’s July 2018 decision, we changed the licensing model for the Google apps we build for use on Android phones, creating new, separate licenses for Google Play, the Google Chrome browser, and for Google Search. In doing so, we maintained the freedom for phone makers to install any alternative app alongside a Google app.

Now we’ll also do more to ensure that Android phone owners know about the wide choice of browsers and search engines available to download to their phones. This will involve asking users of existing and new Android devices in Europe which browser and search apps they would like to use.
